Trivia EH? John McCrae

  • McCrae was born in 1872
  • Veterans Day in the USA is a day that recognizes the importance of soldiers (living & dead) to America’s quality of life & liberty.
  • Memorial Day in the USA was initiallly a day to honour the soldiers killed in the Civil War by visiting their gravesites and decorating their tombstones. It was eventually expanded to include soldiers from all American wars.
  • Alexis Helmer was the friend, whose burial inspired McCrae to write his famous remembrance poem
  • The poem was first published in 1915
  • McCrae died on Jan 28, 1918. During the funeral, in military tradition, McCrae’s horse (named Bonfire) wore McCrae’s boots backwards.
